Pharmacists are warning consumers not to use Nexium, a prescription acid-suppressing medication commonly known as Nexium. The drug may cause stomach pain, heartburn and other gastrointestinal symptoms.
In a recent study conducted at a local pharmacy, the researchers found that consumers were more likely to be warned against taking Nexium than non-prescription consumers.
In the study, the researchers found that the FDA has placed the drug on the black list of prescription drugs intended for uses not listed on the drug label. Additionally, the study found that the most common prescription medications used to treat heartburn, nausea, acid reflux and diarrhea were not found in the drug’s label. Additionally, the drug was not available on prescription in the US.
The most common side effects of the drug were nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and constipation. Consumers who took the drug should be aware of these side effects and consult a healthcare professional for more information.
The drug is sold under the brand name Esomeprazole. Esomeprazole has not been linked to any health risks. However, some studies have shown that some people taking Nexium have more gastrointestinal side effects than those not taking the drug.
Pharmacists are advised to be alert to potential drug interactions when using Nexium.
The makers of Nexium, Nexium brand of which is used to treat heartburn, have also warned consumers not to use the drug.

In a statement, the FDA stated, “We strongly advise you to inform your doctor or pharmacist of any other medications, supplements, herbal products or other medical treatments you are currently taking, as well as any other medications you have recently taken.”
A spokesman for Pfizer Inc., the maker of Nexium, said, “Pfizer Inc.'s Nexium is a prescription drug and should be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional.”
A spokesman for the company said, “We are currently working to develop a new class of medications called esomeprazole that may be safer and more effective in treating heartburn.”
The FDA also warned that the drug is not available on the US market, but the warning comes from the drug’s label. It is not yet known when the drug will be made available on the market.
In response, Pfizer Inc. said, “Patients and prescribers should carefully read the patient information leaflet provided by their doctor. The patient should also inform their doctor and pharmacist if they are taking any other medications, including those not listed on the patient information leaflet.”
The company also noted that the FDA’s warning has not been updated since the drug’s original manufacturer discontinued its Nexium.
The warning states that the drug is not a substitute for lifestyle changes, such as exercise, stress reduction, smoking cessation or reducing alcohol consumption.
“The information provided in the warning is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. You should consult a healthcare professional if you have any medical conditions or are taking any medications,” the warning reads. “Healthcare professionals and patients should discuss all medications, supplements, herbal products or other treatments you are currently taking, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products and dietary supplements, with a view to determining if they are safe and appropriate for you.”
The warning also states that the drug should not be used by individuals with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to esomeprazole.
The FDA also stated, “The use of Nexium in people with known hypersensitivity to esomeprazole may result in a life-threatening condition called hypersensitivity pneumonitis.
